AFCON U23: Ghana draw with Cameroon in opening Group match
Ghana’s Black Meteors settled for a 1-1 draw with Cameroon in the opening Group match of the Africa U23 Cup of Nations.
The 1993 Olympic bronze medalist had to rally from a goal down to pull even.
In a game which barely saw many opportunities, both teams took their chances in the second half as they shared honors at the Cairo International Stadium.
Stephane Zabo shot Cameroon into the lead with a stunning free kick after Habib Mohammed had fouled an opponent on the edge of the box.
The Black Meteors lifted their game after conceding with Coach Ibrahim Tanko introducing Emmanuel Lomotey and Osei Owusu for Simon Zibo and captain Yaw Yeboah respectively.
Evans Mensah seems to be the livewire for the Black Meteors with his silky display, a performance which earned him the man-of-the-match award.
Ghana would find the needed equalizer in the 86th minute when defender Mohammed Habib whose earlier foul saw the team concede took advantage on a deflected effort and bundled the ball into the net to draw the Black Meteors level.
Ghana will now take on host Egypt in the second Group match on Monday in an attempt to progress to the next round.
