A bloated stomach is usually caused by problems digesting certain foods.
This can cause trapped or excess wind, which leads to an uncomfortable, gassy feeling.
This happens due to certain foods creating more gas in the digestive tract than others.
The most obvious types of food that are hard to digest are stodgy and junk foods.
Fizzy drinks and beer can also cause excess gas and a bloated tummy.
However, some healthy foods like vegetables can also be difficult to digest.
One common, staple vegetable that the digestive system struggles to digest is broccoli.
This is due to a sugar found in broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables called raffinose.
The digestive system struggles to digest raffinose due to a lack of enzymes able to break it down.
So instead of being broken down in the small intestine, it gets passed to the large intestine where bacteria attempt to break it down.
This can produce a lot of gas and an uncomfortable, bloated feeling.
Other cruciferous vegetables also containing raffinose include cabbage, cauliflower, sprouts and asparagus.
Vegetables with raffinose are generally easier to digest when cooked.
If you decide to cut down on broccoli to prevent a bloated stomach, it’s important to ensure you still get your five-a-day from other vegetables and fruit.
“Most of us have experienced the feeling of being bloated, when your tummy is stretched, puffy and uncomfortable,” said the NHS.
“Get rid of bloating by cutting out fizzy drinks and foods that cause wind.”
“But make sure you still eat five portions of fruit and vegetables a day.”
While eating, you should eat slowly with your mouth closed, in order to avoid gulping down air with your food.
You should also eat at regular intervals to help your digestive system get into a routine, allowing digestion to flow more smoothly.
Try not to rush meals or eat on the go.
