Ghana’s three boxing medallists hopeful, Shakul Samed, Abdul Wahid Omar and Ms. Ornella Sathoud, will begin their Commonwealth Games tribute on Friday, July 29, 2022 at the NEC Games Village.
Light heavyweight boxer Samed takes on Mauritius’ Luc Jean Rosalba in a round of 32 draw, while 2014 Commonwealth Games bronze medalist Omar takes on Isle of Man’s Jamie Devine in a light welterweight round of 32.
Ornella, on the other hand, will face England’s Kerry Davis in the women’s middleweight round of 16.
Reacting to the draw, Kwasi Ofori Asare, the coach of the national amateur boxing team, said he was satisfied with the draw and expected his team to sail into the next round of the competition.
Coach Asare explained that the team is in good condition to face any opponent that comes their way. “It is not easy but I am happy with the pairings because the team was in good form before the tournament,” coach Asare told Graphic Online.
“The three fighters who started the competition are very ready and are waiting to be properly evaluated on Friday.”
On the other hand, middleweight Abubakar Quartey takes on Nigeria’s Adeyinka Benson in a round of 16 playoff on July 31, while 2018 bronze medalist Jessie Lartey takes on England’s Harris Akbar Mohammed in a light middleweight playoff on August 2.
Welterweight Alfred Kotey takes on Rohit Tokas in Indonesia on August 2 and Joseph Commey takes on Betero Aaree in Kiribati on July 30.
In the bantamweight division, Abraham Mensah will face the winner of Hassan Shaffi Bakari of Kenya and Rukmal Prasanna of Sri Lanka in a round of 16 bout on August 2.
Samuel Yaw Addo is scheduled to fight Northern Ireland’s Paiva Clepson Antonio Dos Santos in a flyweight bout on August 1st.
